History

The vision of a “Healthy City” is what has inspired us over the last 20 years. The journey has been one of great success and has been determined by our membership groups identifying the direction at each step:

Between 1991 and 1995 – Focusing on four programmes (healthy ageing, child accident prevention, environment and health and crime) to understand what we mean by the Healthy City approach and to demonstrate it in practice

Between 1995 to 2000 – Moving on to help to build the infrastructure (e.g. Newcastle Health Partnership, Community Action on Health) and programmes (e.g. Health Action Zone) to enable the mainstream sectors and communities to work towards a Healthy City

Between 2000 and 2005 - Empowering disadvantaged communities (e.g. carers, BME communities, D/deaf communities, older people) to influence decisions that relate to their lives.

Between 2006 and 2010 - A period of consolidation, strengthening of the infrastructure of NHC and a clarity in defining our purpose and service.
