Who We Are

Newcastle Healthy City is a dynamic organisation which aims to:

  • promote the health of citizens of Newcastle upon Tyne
  • reduce the inequalities in health between communities within the city

NHC provides management and support to local initiatives.  We employ staff to develop the work plan of the projects.  Each of the projects are accountable to the community through steering groups.

Newcastle Healthy City is affiliated to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and since December 1998 it has been an official member of the International WHO Healthy City Network (WHO European Healthy Cities).

Our work is guided by the following principles:

  • Everyone has a right to health services
  • There should be equity in accessing services
  • Power and decision making should be shared
  • We need more participation and accountability
  • Communities need to have a voice and for that voice to be heard
  • Local co-operation & partnership
  • National & international co-operation

We recognise that health is a complex and crucial issue.  Environmental, economic, social and other factors has influence on everyone’s health - the public health. What happens in BangladeshIceland or any other part of the world affects us in Byker, Scotswood or Kenton.

Wikipedia states that Public health is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. Health is defined and promoted differently by many organizations. The World Health Organization, the United Nations body that sets standards and provides global surveillance of disease, defines health as: "A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Public health experts agree that nutritional, spiritual, and intellectual aspects also affect an individual's health.
