Who We Are

The Health & Race Equality Forum – What is it?

The Health and Race Equality Forum (HAREF) is a network of nearly 100 individuals representing the community, voluntary and statutory sectors in Newcastle.

It works collectively to address inequalities in health and healthcare experienced by individuals from Black and Minority Ethnic communities. The Forum has existed since 2000, when it was known as the Race Area of Special Action.

The key work of the forum is to:

  • Work in partnership, sharing expertise and experience
  • Challenge institutions to address racism through helping to shape race equality policy and practice
  • Provide a multi-agency forum which can develop solutions to gaps in service provision
  • Act as a critical friend to ensure services are effective responsive to the needs of the BME communities
