Action For Health - Senior Citizens In Newcastle
Action for Health – Seniors in Newcastle (AFH-SCIN) is a sub-group of Newcastle Healthy City Project, currently based with the Elders Council of Newcastle and Quality of Life Partnership programme. The group started in 1992 and brings together a group of older people from different parts of the city who are active on older peoples groups and are themselves users of services and/or closely involved with other users.
AFH-SCIN core objectives for older people are:
- Access to health and community care services according to need without discrimination on grounds of age or cost
- Secure warm homes and safe streets
- Access to affordable and stimulating leisure, recreation and educational activities
- Easy-access public transport, and special transport if required
- Prevention of accidents to older people More participation in plans and policies for services to older people
- Recognition of older people’s contribution to society, past, present and future
WHAT DO WE DO ?
- Meet regularly together and with service providers to influence developments
- Participate in strategy, planning and advisory groups on behalf of older people
- Maintain contacts and networks with older people’s groups throughout the city
- Carry out research into older people’s views about services
- Support an older people’s drama group, “Old Spice”
Use “Old Spice” performances to older people’s groups to highlight issues, give information, stimulate discussion, collect opinions.
Use “Old Spice” performances with professional audiences to influence attitudes to older people, work practices and training.
