2. Good news about health care in Newcastle

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) recently released results of its ‘annual health check’ 2008/09 for all 392 NHS trusts in England. The check measures performance in the NHS in key priority areas set by the government.

Overall the findings show the NHS is performing well on quality and financial management, although there are 20 trusts rated weak on quality.

Also, hot off the press, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been short listed for a Patient Safety Award 2010 in the Education and Training category. Winners in all categories will be announced 5 February 2010

3. “Hello” from Anita Harkawat, Community Development Worker working for Newcastle Primary Care Mental Health Service
Hello HAREF Network
I am offering the Mental Health First Aid Training to anyone who wants to know more about mental health.
This is a 2-day course aimed at helping you recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health distress and guide a person towards appropriate professional help.
The course will run on the 23rd - 24th November 2009 and the cost will be £50 per person for the two days.  This includes course materials, lunch and refreshments.

4. Closing the Gap – report on cardiovascular disease

The Care Quality Commission has written a report on tackling cardiovascular disease by focusing on reducing health inequalities.

Recommendations include prescribing statins (drugs that lower cholesterol) and increasing access to stop smoking services as part of a wider prevention programme.

5. Campaign: Mental health hate crime
Stop Hate UK has launched a national campaign aimed at raising awareness of Hate Crime and protecting people with Mental Health problems.

6. 2010 European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion
The European Commission has designated 2010 as the European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion (EY2010).
This reaffirms and strengthens the commitment for the EU, set out in the Lisbon Strategy, to make ‘a decisive impact on the eradication of poverty’.

7. The Equality Bill - What You Need to Know, What You Need to Say!
