Achievements
- Establishment of region’s first strategic Race and Mental Health Action Group with a mandate to take key recommendations forward. Recruitment of Mental Health Workers in the New Deal area, very recently.
- Identifying the need for and defining the concept of a community Advocacy Service in partnership Newcastle CVS and the Newcastle Interpreting Service. The process has now come to fruition with the appointment of Advocacy Case Co-ordinator for a 3 year pilot project funded by the Big Lottery Fund.
- Co-ordination of a city wide Coronory Heart Disease, Stroke and /diabetes and community cardiac rehabilitation. Recruitment of bilingual community health workers in the New Deal Area. Development of policy/guidance notes concentrating on preventative health care in specific ethnic groups. Currently involved in the Flu Vaccination Campaign to increase the uptake of the vaccine by members of BME communities.
- Development of Ethnic Monitoring and Audit Task Group led by the Hospital Trust. Piloting a project to monitor and audit ethnicity and begin the process of gathering systematic data.
- Raising awareness for the need to address health and ethnicity issues with senior managers within the Primary Care Trust as a key part of influencing the mainstream. We hope to be representing on the Strategic Health Authority Regional Forum in the very near future.
- Providing a forum for discussion, co-operation, networking, fruitful partnerships and action for change.
- Working in partnership with Community Action on health and PCT Health Development Team to contribute to increasing Patient and Public Involvement.
- Active involvement and contribution to the Agenda for Change to enable the health services to look the diversity within BME communities and evolve suitable services with the aim of increasing access.
